Voies Vertes et Cyclo Tourism

By Angela Stephens

Voies Vertes are greenways for bicycle touring. South Burgundy is making a huge effort to provide 600km of cycle paths. Based at Chalon-sur-Saone for several days Mark and I set off to discover what was available for cyclists. Part of the old Paris-Lyon-Marseilles railway line had been converted into a wonderfully smooth wide cycle path. Joining the path at Givry, an attractive market town, we cycled as far as Tunnel du Bois Clair , a total of 46km. Being on a railway gradient, cycling was easy for most of the way, although there was a sting in the tail. There are 16 directional map boards along the length of the path. A number of facilities and services are accessible along the way. Car parks, toilets, water fawcets, picnic areas with tables and benches, shaded rest areas, bicycle parking, bicycle and roller
blade rentals and skate parks, a climbing wall, too, on one of the embankments. We were especially impressed with the wide selection of hire bicycles, ranging from singles, tandems, quads and recumbents, plus bicycles adapted for the disabled and some electric powered bicycles.
